From Idea to Reality: Gaudí in Barcelona
One of the reasons I created “Start Your Damn Business Already!” is because I love to make things, take things from idea to reality. I wanted to share what I learned along the way, and “Start Your Damn Business Already!” gave me an excuse to explore new areas, talk to new people, and make something new myself – all from an idea.
With the internet comes the ability and power for anyone to create in the digital space, to make real money in a place that exists in bits and and pixels. It’s easier and easier to take things from idea to reality. This is one of the reasons I love web design and development, brand development, and online marketing.
My first taste of Barcelona was not so pleasant. Bombarded by tourist-hungry businesses and constantly told to “cuidado!”, I did not like the dirty rubble and over-crowding. But I knew there had to be more, and so made a second trip to Barcelona, to see the artistic creations of Antoni Gaudí at La Sagrada Familia.
Holy wow. I’m so glad I did.
La Sagrada Família is huge, beautiful, and extremely detailed. Gaudí took over as lead architect at the age of 31 in 1883. Seeing Guadí’s work reminds me the power of the human mind, of human creativity, and of the ability for us to take initiative and create something so magnificent it spans generations.
Personally, it reminds me of all the things I’ve always wanted to create, and inspires me to keep dreaming big even in the face of doubt and opposition. Gaudí experienced much criticism for his work being old, outdated, and simply unattrative. Gaudí dedicated his life to his vision and his passion.
Enough talking.
Here are a few of the photos I took of La Sagrada Família, Casa Batllo, and Casa Mila, and from my day trip from Tarragona to Barcelona.
- Tarragona train station
- Morning coffee at a local cafe in Tarragona
- Pretty buildings line the street Passeig de Gracia, Barcelona
- Another lovely building on Passeig de Gracia, Barcelona

- Notice the Metro station right in front of La Sagrada Família. As soon as I turned from exiting the Metro – BAM! – Catholic glory far more amazing that I’d ever imagined.
- “Sanctus” means “holy” (La Sagrada Família)
- Outer wall detail in the foreground, construction in the background (La Sagrada Família)
